Let's talk DOMS...

Let's talk DOMS...

DOMS! Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness... or Dramatically Overthinking My Squats?

1. What is DOMS?

DOMS stands for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness—aka the "friendly reminder" that you worked out yesterday. It’s that achy, stiff feeling you get 12-48 hours after pushing your body to its limits.

It’s caused by tiny muscle tears during activity, especially eccentric movements like lowering weights or running downhill, triggering inflammation and repair.

2. Why Does DOMS Happen?

Eccentric Movements: Exercises that lengthen your muscles under tension cause more micro-tears, leading to DOMS.

Inflammation: The immune system rushes to repair the micro-tears, resulting in swelling and tenderness.

Lactic Acid Myth: Despite common belief, lactic acid isn’t the main culprit of DOMS—it’s actually a byproduct that dissipates within hours of exercise.

Common after new or especially intense workouts, and even though it doesn't feel like it... it's proof that you're on the path to greatness (and probably walking like a penguin).
